I had my first animal watch at the zoo yesterday and how 'lucky' was I to watch the newcomer on the 'lucky' summer day. The 'lucky' summer day that I'm referring to is the day when the true Aussie summer heat attacks. There is always a day in summer with the temperature suddenly shooting up to 40 deg Celsius. And yesterday was 41 deg Celsius! x.x
Oh, and the newcomer that I'm talking about is a Tasmanian devil. So this watch is to make sure that he is comfortable with the new surroundings and doesn't escape. I did the morning shift which was bearable as the temperature was not at its highest yet. And also glad that there's shade at the exhibit, plus it's very windy as well. So it's still not as bad.
Well, because the exhibit replicates the Aussie desert environment, occasionally there will be a gust of mini sandstorm blowing at me when the strong wind arrives. After that, my face will be full of sand. @@" How interesting. People thought that I was crying. Swt. I think I should bring my swimming goggles along next time.
When the keeper showed me where the Tassie devil was, he then looked at a giant rock and said: "Hey Siew May! How are you Siew May? Come out buddy!"
Huh?? What?? Then I asked the keeper what's the devil's name. He said again: "Siew May". I said: "That's my name Siew May." and pointed at my name badge. He was very surprised: "Oh! Yay! Siew May and Siew May!" LOL!
Then he added: "But his spelling is S-U-M-A-E". Ah... So it's Sumae the Tassie devil. Haha.
You might wonder, it's not the same pronunciation. But most Australians couldn't pronounce my 'Siew', they usually pronounce as 'Sue'. So Siew May = Sumae! At least now the keepers can remember my name easily.
Sumae was in his burrow the whole time. At least I can still see his face, and he is sooooo cuteeee!! If you have good eyes, you can see his ear in the photo.
Currently there are Zooperheroes in the zoo to interact with the children. I met one Zooperwoman yesterday. She said she's walking around trying to find someone to talk to, and because of this heat, the zoo was super quiet. This is only a casual costume as it's impossible to wear the full hero costume under this scorching heat. I wonder if she will get a pattern around her eyes after this. Lol.
Look at the cute zebras! My first time seeing them soooooo motionless. They must be talking to each other about the heat.
"What the heck is kookaburra?" This photo answers your question. Hahahaha!
Oh my cute Arturo!! Heading for a swim. Erm... actually he poo poo first before he swam. Lol. I just skipped a picture of him. I still wonder why he never poos on the ground. Is he toilet-trained?
Look at him!! SO CUTE!!!!! =D
He did a few laps. Quite a good swimmer.
Cooling himself down after the swim. He's lucky to have private pool.
Having the shift on this day was not completely bad since I got the chance to see what the animals were doing on the hottest day of the year.
